When we plan our distributed generation and cogeneration projects in NYC we find that their interconnection to the grid is governed by a special set of rules developed specifically for Con Edison’s “network grid.” Not just an interconnect issue, these rules dramatically affect the sizing and economics of systems.  Just what is the nature of this design and why does it restrict feeding electricity back to the grid? Does this apply everywhere in the Con Ed system and how does one tell if a site is in one kind of grid or another?  How do these rules relate to the configuration of transformers and meters that we see in typical buildings? What interconnection strategies and options are possible? We expect that in addition to our speakers, many of our chapter members will share their experiences and thoughts about interconnection issues and their impacts on system design. If knowledge is power, this meeting should generate a good bit of excitation.

Our Speaker

Mr. Brian Cronin, PE, president of CSA Engineering Services, has extensive power engineering experience in the utility and industrial sectors in electrical design, combined heat and power, electrical system studies and control and protection scheme design. His involvement includes engineering and troubleshooting of various electric systems for both manufacturers and end users while in engineering positions with LIPA over a period of 13 years and during 5 years as a senior field applications engineer with Siemens Power Transmission and Distribution (PT&D). He has also testified as an expert witness in various law suits regarding protective schemes for electric facilities.  Mr. Cronin holds a BEE from Manhattan College and an MBA from the NY Institute of Technology.
