SHOULD I WEAR A SWEATER?
…The Adaptive Approach to
Thermal Comfort
as presented at USGBC’s Greenbuild International Conference & Expo / Pittsburgh 2003
Thursday January 15, 2004 – 5:30pm to 7:30pm
Albany Institute of History and Art
125 Washington Avenue, Albany, NY
Guest Speaker:
Nick Rajkovich, Project Manager, LEED AP
Einhorn Yaffee Prescott
Thermal comfort research
has focused primarily on defining the environmental conditions that produce
thermal comfort, though thermal comfort is defined as "that condition of
mind which expresses satisfaction with the thermal environment". A
review of research reveals a lack of information on the social conditions that
provide thermal comfort: expectation, memory, and the ability to control the
thermal environment, conditions that are as influential in producing thermal
comfort as the thermal environment. This presentation will provide
an overview to the adaptive model of thermal comfort proposed for
ASHRAE Standard 55, the international standard used to define thermal comfort
in occupied spaces.
