HIGH-PERFORMANCE GREEN BUILDING DESIGN
BUILDING A GREEN SCHOOL / LONG ISLAND
A School Board Committed to Green Design
The project intent was for
elements of green architecture to be incorporated into the design of the
mechanical systems, for the design to maximize use of available utility
rebates, and for the project to maintain its current budget constraints…The
architectural plans had already been approved and construction of the
Building was underway when the redesign
process for the mechanical system began…

Short Bios
Bill Chaleff has
designed and built over 400 homes on the East End of Long Island, from 1972
until the present. His varied
experience includes design of metal decking radiant floor slab construction;
construction of first earth-covered residence (LI / 1979); and developing a
prototype for a passive solar starter home (Suntrap X / 1983). As a design instructor, he has taught
courses at Southampton College, Hampton Day School / Bridgehampton, Hampton Day
School and Hampton Bays High School. Bill studied architecture at Cooper Union
and has a BS and Bachelor of Architecture from CCNY.
John Rice has over 19 years of experience in
designing heating, ventilation and air conditioning systems with over eight
years design and project management experience at AFE where he works personally
on each project: from conceptual
stages, through design and construction – carefully coordinating the design
team’s efforts with his client’s requirements.
His project experience is wide and varied. However, he takes particular pleasure in his strengths at energy
analysis, systems evaluation and report writing. John studied engineering at
Columbia University’s School of Engineering and Applied Science and holds a
Bachelor of Science Degree in Mechanical Engineering.
