Active Committees » Brownfields

Brownfields aren’t just part of industrial areas in many major cities. They’re right here in our own backyards around the Capital Region. The problem with redevelopment of theses lands is that the majority of the time is that the cost to clean it up outweighs the value of the land once it is completed. However, with the demand for developable land increasing each year, the need for brownfield development has never been greater. With that demand the capabilities of today’s technology are advancing to keep up with redevelopment efforts.
Methods such as bioremediation, soil vapor extraction and phytoremediation have opened up new business opportunities not only for environmental cleanup companies but for energy companies as well. Brownfield sites tend to be located near the highways, railways and rivers of Albany. As such, revitalization of these sites should be a high priority to the city and surrounding areas. These locations also make the land prime real estate for housing developers and various business owners. The cleanup of brownfield sites not only assists the environmental turn-around of the city, but also greatly enhances our own economic prosperity.
