Buildings account for the majority of energy use in the United States. This includes, but is not limited to, land, water and electricity consumption. By embracing the practice of using healthier, more resource-efficient models of construction, renovation, operation, maintenance and demolition we can ensure the future of our cities, businesses and our lives.
With resources at hand such as solar and geothermal power the companies creating these structures can make a difference. And with many government grant and tax incentive programs available, the cost to businesses is substantially reduced. Additionally, there are the long-term effects to consider. Once the green additions are in place the pay back is relatively quick, improving the cost of utilities to office and building owners.
In short, when an area has an increasing demand for green buildings it becomes very attractive for business owners. Businesses interested in green buildings can then relocate to our area, thereby boosting the local economy and in turn boosting the quality of our environment. This could also increase Albany’s tourist traffic, as city residents can come and relax for a weekend in a green environment.
